As leaders, we are sometimes called upon to help resolve conflicts between our staff or even our peers. This responsibility can be challenging, requiring a delicate balance of empathy, authority, and strategic thinking.

In this workshop, we delve deeply into the multifaceted role of the mediator, examining not only the essential qualities and behaviours that facilitate effective mediation but also those that can hinder the process.

We explore a range of concrete strategies designed to be employed both in advance of and during mediation conversations.

These strategies are aimed at fostering an environment where conflict resolution can occur in a manner that is both healthy and productive, ensuring that all parties feel heard and respected, and that the outcomes are constructive and sustainable.

Learning Outcomes
  • Explain the role of the mediator, including behaviours that support and do not support mediation
  • Apply key concepts of rules of engagement, coaching, and advance preparation to set up a mediation conversation for success
  • Apply the eight steps of a mediation conversation to support conflict resolution in a simulated setting
